› Suspension bondage safety

Dec 07, 2006
Suspension bondage is a particular type of bondage that is definitely not a beginner's fun. Among other types of bondage, suspension can be considered an edge play. Definitely as well as with any other BDSM ( ) practice, safety comes to the fore of all the other tasks. Of course, a lot depends on how far you are going in your exploration, but a lot of factors should be taken into consideration.

Suspension bondage implies that you are not simply tied up, but also hanged up in a vertical or horizontal position. Basically you will need to use special equipment to lift your bottom in the air: ceiling fixing and BDSM suspension devices, such as cuffs and bondage sacks.

The main danger of suspension comes from the fact that unlike the static bondage where your body parts are simply restricted, here the weight of the body adds an additional and I must say quite a heavy tension. The usual blood flow takes quite unconventional way. And all those techniques that are to assure safe hanging are mainly aimed to balance weight burden so that it can be more or less even throughout the body.

It's important to know while a person is hanging- the center of gravity can be distributed quite differently and some parts of the body are potentially harmful. So avoid suspension where your wrists or forearms become are stressed and use devices that were designed with this purpose.

You should redouble your vigilance in order not to release from the bondage safely as in most cases it restricts blood circulation and normal breathing.

The usual session in suspension bondage should not exceed several minutes when you begin. The more so if your partner is inexperienced (and here I would strongly advice to find a skilled one). But as we all learn to do things a step by step suspension can be a way-out. This method allows you to be more in control of the process. Indeed, oriental fellows know how a real bondage should work. They do not start from all-round bondage, but rather practice partial suspension, allowing some body parts to stay on the floor.

Having some simple tools handy can also be of use. First of all, we cannot exclude the possibility of a bottom to fall down, that's why you need to have some pillows or several blankets available for soft landing. And don't forget to make use of first aid.

suspension bondage can be very rewarding. suspending a male with a tube from his penis to his mouth is very confining with a risk/reward scenario

I would say that nerve damage is the single biggest risk in suspension bondage. I have collected a fair bit of wisdom on bondage safety from various sources, including several of the best riggers around. It can be found at www.esinem.com/main-safety.html. This is an on-going project, so feel free to contribute to this resource.
